10 OTHER COMMANDMENTS TO LIVE BY
  1. You shall not worry, for worry is the most unproductive of all human activities.
  2. You shall not be fearful, for most of the things we fear never come to pass.
  3. You shall not carry grudges, for they are the heaviest of all life's burdens.
  4. You shall face each problem as it comes. You can only handle one at a time anyway.
  5. You shall not take problems to bed with you, for they make very poor bedfellows.
  6. You shall not borrow other people's problems. They can better care for them than you.
  7. You shall not try to relive yesterday for good or ill, it is forever gone. Concentrate on what is happening in your life and be happy now!
  8. You shall be a good listener, for only when you listen do you hear ideas different from your own.
  9. You shall not become "bogged down" by frustration, for 90% of it is rooted in self-pity and will only interfere with positive action.
  10. You shall count your blessings, never overlooking the small ones, for a lot of small blessings add up to a big one.
DO FINGERS GROW BACK? Tue, 24 Oct 2000 09:14:13

A man came out of his home to admire his new truck. To his puzzlement, his three-year-old son was happily hammering dents into the shiny paint. The man ran to his son, knocked him away, hammered the little boy's hands into a pulp as punishment.

When the father calmed down, he rushed his son to the hospital. Although the doctor tried desperately to save the crushed bones, he finally had to amputate the fingers from both the boy's hands. When the boy woke up from the surgery and saw his bandaged stubs, he innocently said, "Daddy, I'm sorry about your truck." Then he asked, "but when are my fingers going to grow back?" The father went home and committed suicide.

Think about the story the next time you see someone spilled milk at a dinner table or hear a baby cry. Think first before you lose your patience and become angry with someone you love. Trucks can be repaired. Broken bones and hurt feelings often cannot.

Too often we fail to recognize the difference between the person and the performance. People make mistakes. We are allowed to make mistakes. But the actions we take while in a rage will haunt us forever. Pause and ponder. Think before you act. Be patient.

Always remember: YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO BE ANGRY, BUT YOU HAVE NO RIGHT TO BE CRUEL...UNDERSTAND AND LOVE.

"IN YOUR ANGER, DO NOT SIN." (Ephesians 4:26)

Labels

We're fond of giving labels to others when the other person deviates from the norm. This labeling of others is practiced unconsiously and more often we are not even aware of what we are doing. In the Philippines, we love labeling people according to their ethnic background. We give names such as tisoy, chinoy, Chinese, bombay, kano, more often refferring to fellow Filipinos who do not look or act as "typical" Filipinos. Maybe we have to define the term: Filipino or rather what we perceive to be Filipino looking.

History bears witness that there were three main groups that came to the Philippines. The first wave of settlers were the Negritoes. These were the forebears of the present day aetas. They were not terribly sophisticated and lived a very rudimentary life. Hunting, gathering and slash burn style of farming were their specialty. The next wave of immigrants were the Indons from present day Indonesia. Some tribal groups are directly descended from these groups. The next wave were the Malays. They were sopisticated people and they introduced Islam to the Philippines. They settled as far north as Ilocos.

These groups of people intermarried with each other. Foreigners such as the Chinese, Arabs and Indians came to the Islands to trade and more often than not settled and intermarried with the local people.

Next came the Spaniards who were suprised to find that the Philippines at that point in time was a thriving civilization with Islam as its main religion. Of course, the Spaniards had to conquer us to save us from Islam (remember that the Spaniard themselves had to fight a war to free themselves from Turkish/Islam rule). In fact during the battle for Manila, the ruler Rajah Soliman, had a fort (now Fort Santiago) and cannons made by the local chinese settlers. The Spaniards after conquering us proceeded to make us good catholics and were generally successful except in Mindanao. Of course the Spaniards intermarried with the natives. The Spanish friars too were fairly active in the reproduction arena. Some of Manila's oldest and wealthiest families were descended from priests most notably the Araneta family who are descended from two priest brothers.

During the Spanish era of our history, other settlers came over and intermarried with local, spanish and other races. The ancestor of Jose Rizal settled in the Calamba area. The Pardo de Taveras in the Manila area. A frenchman named Gaston settled in the Bacolod, Iloilo area and founded the Gaston family. So did the other frenchman named Claparols.

By the time the mid 19th century started, Filipino families were so racially diverse that the definition of a brown skinned, pug nose, malay were not even accurate. The Illustrado families were mostly made up of mestizo Spanish (represented by Pardo de Tavera, Roxas, Araneta, Quezon) and mestizo Chinese (Rizal, Chuidian, Lopez, Osmena, Aguinaldo, Cojuangco, Aquino, Recto). These were the people who first called themselves Filipinos.

Then to complicate matters, the Americans came. Unlike the Spaniards, the Americans at that time thought themselves superior so there were few intermarriages. And in the mid-twentieth century, the Japanese invaded. The Japanese just didn't marry our women, they also kept them as mistresses and they also raped them. Again, children were born of Japanese fathers and local mothers.

Oh and the Indians and the Chinese never stopped coming. Every year up to the present these two groups have never, ever stopped coming to our shores. The Arabs too were settling down with local girls.

So how does a typical Filipino look? Could we all honestly say that a typical Filipino is a brown skin, pug nose, meduim height, black hair belonging to the malay ethnic group?

I do not fit this description. I'm tall, fair skin, slanted eyes, medium nose and I consider myself Filipino. Sometimes, the other Filipinos attaches a label. I get called Chinese, Chinoy, Japon, etc. but never ever Filipino or Pinoy. My cousins who share my last name and my middle name which is of Chinese origin do not get called Chinese, Chinoy, Intsik. Rather because of their very prominent nose, caucasian features and round eyes are called tisoy, Spangol, Spanish, etc. but never ever Pinoy or Filipino. It really is funny to have someone call me Intsik or my cousins Tisoy when all we were born here, lived here, and our ancestors were here probably longer than the 19th century immigrants to be called anything but Pinoy.

A very good friend of mine has always been called Tisoy for his prominent caucasian features. But his mother is a Lacson from Bacolod. The Lacson are of Chinese origin. His father is Heras and is of Spanish descent. He grew up here and feels more Pinoy than the average Pinoy.

What is even more distressing are Filipinos that call themselves Pinoy but once they're in a foreign land, they deny their origins or even answer you in heavily accented English. This reminds me of an incident.

I was working in the Hong Kong when a fellow Filipino colleague of mine invited me out for drinks. Since I was bored and wanted to unwind from the stresses of adjusting to a new environment, I welcomed the invitation. We entered a bar and within an hour this colleague of mine was heavily into a conversation with a very attractive woman. Then I heard the woman say: "So where are you from?" "Guess," responded.

"Mexico?" she asked. "Yup," he said. I stared at him. After the woman excused herself, I asked him why he didn't tell her he was pinoy. "Are you crazy? Filipinos are domestic workers here. She won't go out with me!"

Oh he was ashamed to be Filipino. Is he Filipino? He fits the stereotypical description of a pinoy.

What about the owners of establishments who give preferentail treatment to foreigners and treat fellow pinoys as trash?

Are Filipinos defined as a malay ethnic group? Or are we defined as a people with diverse ancestry sharing the same cultural traditions and customs who happen to live in the Philippines?

Labels? Thrash them. After all, labels tend to make us divided as a people. Refer to a Muslim Filipino as Filipino, do the same for the Spanish Filipino. Only then can we heal as a nation.

...
